Divemaster Internship Experience

Experience first-hand what it’s like to complete a PADI Divemaster course (Divemaster Internship) with Aloha Diving. Leah was a Divemaster Trainee in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Divemaster Internship Experience – Leah Matthews

The moment I gained my PADI Open Water certification in Thailand in July 2019, I knew I had the diving bug and wanted to spend as much time under the waves learning as I could. My plan was to return to the UK, hand in my notice and return to Thailand to continue diving. Unfortunately, a pesky little pandemic called Covid-19 got in the way, and it wasn’t until July 2022 that I was finally able to leave my job, travel to Bali to gain my Advanced Open Water Certification, and then on to Phuket to complete the Rescue Diver and Divemaster Certification.

Why I choose Aloha Diving for my Divemaster Internship

Having already dived in Koh Tao for my Open Water, I wanted to dive somewhere new in Thailand for my Divemaster training, and it was also important to me that the company I worked with were environmentally conscious. Upon researching dive companies in Phuket, Aloha Diving immediately stood out from the rest with their focus on being completely carbon neutral to offset the environmental impact of diving. The moment I arrived on the Aloha Diving boat I knew I had made the right choice; not only do Aloha make every effort to dive in an environmentally sustainable way, but Simon is also a meticulous instructor with a penchant for detail and I knew I was in incredibly safe hands. Once the Rescue course was under my belt, Simon led my head-first into the world of a PADI Divemaster.

The PADI Divemaster Internship

Day to day life as a Divemaster is incredibly varied and always busy. From skills under the waves such as dive-site mapping, search and recovery, guiding fun divers and supporting the instructors when delivering training to new divers, to everything on the boat itself: organising the dive-deck, preparing equipment, planning dives… the list goes on! There is always something to do and with Simon and Alice’s expert knowledge guiding me, I was constantly learning.

As a Divemaster, there is nothing more satisfying than executing a smooth day of well-planned diving on the boat which ends with excited divers happily swapping stories about their dives and eager to return the next day to experience more. I loved seeing the progression of newbie Open Water divers into confident certified divers, and being able to facilitate the instructors with this growth and introduce new divers into the world of Scuba is a privilege. My scuba-diving journey is far from over, and I look forward to applying my skills as a newly certified Divemaster in a wide range of diving contexts in the future. Thanks Aloha!
