Diving in Khao Lak is possible with boat diving day trips. However, this holiday destination is located at the gateway to the famous Similan Islands, so it is worthwhile to take a multi-day diving cruise/liveaboard. Especially in the north are in various national parks extremely attractive dive sites to find such as Richelieu Rock, Koh Tachai and Surin Islands. Encounters with manta rays and whale sharks in clear waters are not uncommon in these areas during the season (mid-October, November, December, January, February, March, April, mid-May).

When is the best time for scuba diving in Khao Lak?

The best scuba diving in Khao Lak is done at the Similan Islands Marine Park and Surin Islands the diving here is bound to the opening times of the National Park. The Similan Island National Park closes from May to October. Therefore scuba diving in Khao Lak is only possible from November to April.

In the other half of the year divers better head go to Phuket which is open for diving all year round.

The water temperature in Khao Lak / Similan Islands – Koh Bon – Koh Tachai – Surin Islands incl. Richelieu Rock?

The Andaman sea around Khao Lak is usually between 25 and 29 degrees Celsius all year round.

During February and March nutrient rich currents may swell up from the open ocean and bring “cold water” with them for short periods. But it rarely gets colder than 25 degrees. If you are sensitive to colder water, an ideal wetsuit is a 3mm shorty or long suit. Shorty’s are available for hire on the Liveaboard cruises.

A benefit from these “cold currents” is that manta rays and whale sharks follow them and can provide an unexpected spectacle.

What is the usual underwater visibility?

The visibility at the dive sites varies during the year and from site to site. Dive sites around Similan Islands enjoy great visibility. Mostly in the 20-30m range.
Dive sites like Tachai Pinnacle, Koh Bon and Richelieu Rock offer a little less. Mostly in the 15m range, with the odd 25+ m day,

Overall, divers can expect decent visibility when scuba diving in Khao Lak.
