  • Removing the snorkel from the mouth when descending and the reasons behind it

Practical Snorkeling Course

First session

  • Assemble, adjust, prepare, put on, and remove mask, fins, snorkel, and buoyancy device
  • Buddy pre-snorkel safety check
  • Entry and exit from a boat
  • Adjust for proper weighting as consistent with freediving practices
  • Breathe through a snorkel using airway control and swimming at the surface in water too deep to stand
  • Clear a snorkel of water at the surface using the blast method
  • Obtain positive buoyancy at the surface in water too deep to stand, either by removing a weight belt or orally inflating the snorkeling vest
  • Stay within 3 meters/10 feet of a buddy while at the surface
  • Remove the snorkel from the mouth, hold the breath, and make a vertical, head-first dive in water too deep to stand
  • Swim at least 15 meters/50 feet horizontally underwater on a single breath
  • Ascend while looking up and around, holding one hand over the head
  • Upon surfacing, exhale gently, signal the buddy that you’re okay, and breathe relaxed
  • From the surface, watch the buddy descend and be prepared to dive down to assist. Stay within arm’s reach for 1-2 minutes during recovery breathing
  • Communicate using hand signals at the surface and underwater

Second session

  • Put on and adjust equipment.
  • Perform a pre-dive safety check
  • Adjust weighting
  • Proper entries and exits from the boat
  • Appropriate application of skills mastered and demonstrated in the first session
  • Responsibly interact with the environment
