Easy shallows, coral gardens and a reef we help look after.
Koh Maithon is a long, narrow island around one hour from Chalong Pier, with seven dive sites ranging from 2 to 25 metres. Much of the island is fringed by coral reef, running along the coastline before spreading into coral gardens in deeper water.
We usually dive Koh Maithon by letting the current gently take us along the reef. The shallow reefs and gentle currents make it one of our favourite places for courses.
Around South Tip and Razor Reef, currents can be stronger, so we only dive these sites when conditions are right.
Eastern Promise and Windmill Bay are our adopted dive sites through PADI AWARE's Adopt the Blue programme. We regularly monitor the reefs, report what we find and collect marine debris during all our reef clean-ups.
Eastern Promise is also home to a long-running coral restoration project, with different structures placed among the natural reef to support and study coral growth.
Watch your bearings in the coral garden. It's quite a labyrinth—we've been known to get lost in it too.
Radio Bay, No Name Bay and Windmill Bay and South Reef all follow a similar pattern. Look closely in the shallows for razorfish families—and even closer inside the sea urchins for tiny urchin clingfish.
The reef drops quite steeply towards a gravelly bottom at around 25 metres. Currents accelerate around the end of the island, so we only dive South Tip when conditions are right.
When they are, the stronger water movement brings large schools of fish around the tip.
Razor Reef lies just offshore from South Reef and is formed by several huge slabs of rock covered in hard and soft corals, running parallel to each other, surrounded by coral gardens. We've explored three of the slabs so far and suspect there are still a few more waiting to be found. Like South Tip, we only dive Razor Reef when the current allows.
