A quiet little island with big boulders and plenty hiding between them.
Green Island is a tiny limestone island east of Phuket, with huge granite boulders continuing below the water. In the shallows, some are still covered in green moss; deeper down, they become home to crabs, shrimps, nudibranchs and other small reef life.
As far as we know, we are the only Phuket dive centre regularly diving here.
We dive Green Island exclusively in the dry season, when the easterly winds leave the west side of the island protected. We choose the north or south side according to the current and slowly work our way around the boulders.
Green Island is a bit of a treasure hunt—we take it slowly and see what we can find between the rocks.
Crabs are everywhere, along with shrimps, sea snakes and the occasional lobster. Look carefully over the gravel for peacock mantis shrimps hiding in their burrows.
Green Island is also one of our places for finding some of the rarer, more sensitive nudibranch species. Towards either end of the island, large schools of snapper gather around the boulders and often surround us as we swim through. On the northern side, sea fans and sea whips become more common, together with the small remains of an old wooden wreck.
