Anemone Reef is a submerged limestone pinnacle rising from almost 30 metres to around 3–5 metres below the surface. It is covered with marine life from bottom to top.
What makes Anemone Reef unusual is the current. It can be exceptionally strong, so we only dive it around high or low tide, when the current slows enough to comfortably explore the entire reef.
We start deeper and work our way around the pinnacle, gradually getting shallower. The best part often comes towards the end: the top of the reef is covered in anemones and packed with fish, with predators hunting around the schools.
Like King Cruiser, Anemone Reef sits exposed in open water. We only dive it when the tide, current and surface conditions all line up.
White and purple soft corals now cover large parts of the reef, alongside huge barrel sponges and impressive gorgonian sea fans. The shallow top is carpeted with anemones, home to anemonefish and tiny porcelain crabs.
Large schools of snapper and fusiliers gather around the reef and in the narrow channel on the northeast side, with jacks, trevallies, mackerel and tuna hunting among them. And keep an eye out for our rather elusive resident Napoleon wrasse—although apparently he doesn't like showing himself to everybody.
