Where to stay in Phuket for Scuba Diving?

Phuket Scuba Diving Guide

With good reason is Phuket, the “Pearl of the Andaman Sea”, one of the most beautiful places in Thailand. Miles of gently sloping and white sandy beaches are in place along the coast line. Upstate there is a rich vegetation surrounded by a mountainous landscape. Phuket is the largest island of Thailand and is located in the Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean). The distance from the north where the Sarasin Bridge connects the island to the mainland, to the southernmost tip is about 50 km. The east / west width is about 21 km. The capital is Phuket Town where mainly locals live.

The most well-known tourist destination is Patong. There most hotels, restaurants, bars, discos and shops. However, rules through the many tourists throughout the hustle and often chaotic traffic. On the southern beaches Karon and Kata, it is a little quieter. The long beach in Karon is separated from the hotels and resorts by a main road . The same picture can be seen on the beach of Kata. There is a little beach called Kata Noi, mainly visited by guests of the near resort. In an impressive drive along the west coast towards the south you get to Nai Harn, Ao Sane and Yanui Beach. A real insider tip for those seeking relaxation. Another highlight is the southernmost point of Phuket, the Promthep Cape where you can admire from the cliffs a beautiful sunset. Along the road you arrive at Rawai Beach. This section is still dominated by locals and there is a green tourism. Fisherman present every evening their fresh catch, which you can bring to the restaurant for cooking across the road. North of Patong on the west coast in the area of Kamala, Surin Beach, Bang Tao, Layan Beach, Nai Thon Beach, Nai Yang Beach, Tri Trang Beach and Mai Khao many famous luxury resorts are located directly on the beach. On the east coast south of Phuket Town can also be found a few pretty resorts on Cape Panwa. Another main transport hub is Chalong, where the port and various accommodations are located. It is also the starting point for visiting Big Buddha. The worldwide highest Buddha Statue of 45 meters is placed on top of a mountain looking over Chalong bay. Between Chalong and Patong in Kathu there are other tourist attractions, such as the Kathu waterfalls.

For divers want to make the daily diving trips to the southern dive sites of Phuket, a hotel in this region is advisable to book (e.g. Chalong, Rawai, Kata Noi, Kata, Karon, Patong or Kamala). Long and tedious journey times to the port can be avoided like this.

Aloha Diving is awesome. My girlfriend and I emailed Simon months before our trip about taking an open water diver course. Simon promptly responded to our email (as he does with any email or message you may send him) with all the information we needed to get started plus set us up for some online learning. Once we arrived in Phuket, Simon picked us up from where we were staying and we began the class room portion of the course. Simon is an incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and efficient teacher. By the time it was time to start diving Simon had answered all of our questions and we felt very prepared. On the diving days Simon and his staff were prompt with pick up, briefed us on each location and the skills we needed to perform there, and overall ensured we got the most out of every dive by giving us tips and pointing out many different types of sea life. Simon also sent us a file full of pictures he took of us on each dive which is an added plus. I really do not believe we could have had a better experience. Simon and his team are the best and i would recommend them to more

The Andaman Sea is characterised by extremely varied and spectacular dive sites. The diversity and abundance of fish are impressive. Whether huge colorful coral gardens of soft and hard corals, walls and shipwrecks; from beginner (OWD course) until the dive professional (Advanced Adventurer, Rescue Diver, Divemaster, Rebreather Diver) , everyone gets pleasure. Further north of Phuket there are the famous Similan Islands with Richelieu Rock and / or Myanmar (Burma). The starting point for diving tours there is Khao Lak, respectively a place called Tablamu. However, we recommend a multi-day liveaboard to see the highlights of the Similan Islands. Far to the north rise the chances to see whale sharks and manta rays. The distance to the top dive sites is big, which is why they can not be approached with a daily diving excursion. Any other interesting Phuket dive sites in the south of Phuket like Phi Phi, Racha Yai, Racha Noi, King Cruiser, Shark Point, Anemonereef, Koh Doc Mai and Hin Daeng / Hin Muang are approached exclusively from Chalong.

The following information is also important. When diving in Phuket (Patong, Kata, Karon, Chalong, Rawai, etc.), it is common that not every diving school has its own dive boat. The diving schools book their customers at the various big boat operators. This has the advantage, always be able to approach the appropriate dive site and / or desired dive site according to the needs of divers or students. However, make absolutely sure that the diving school is represented by its own instructors on the boat. It often happens that divers, without realizing it, are only booked on the boat and then allocated to a group of divers (possibly with different diving experience). Another important criterion is that a diving center in Phuket has the necessary TAT license to operate legally in Thailand. This number should be visible on the website.
